“At the Western extremities of the Earth abide the Gorgons; monsters abhorred by mortals, with locks of serpents, whom none look upon without perishing.” The Gorgons were three sisters. Their power was so horrific that one was turned to stone by the very sight of them. Two of them were immortal. The third was Medusa. When the hero, Perseus, wanted to defeat them he naturally attacked Medusa. Armed with a bronze sword and a polished shield, he stalked up to her. He looked at her reflection in the shield, and allowing Athena to guide his arm, he struck off her head. He wrapped it up, and brought it to Athena, who fixed it to her shield. It was really Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, who had defeated Medusa, the personification of fear. Perseus was just the instrument she used. This victory of Athena over Medusa thus symbolizes the victory of understanding and wisdom over fear.
